FAQ for Teachers & Educators
Getting Started as a Teacher
Do students need accounts to use kidswriting.ai?
No. As a teacher, you can mark student essays from your own account without students needing to sign up. Just paste an essay, select the exam type and year level, and mark it. This is the fastest way to get started — no student onboarding required.
If you want students to mark their own essays independently and track their own progress, they can create free accounts.
Can I use kidswriting.ai without a Pro subscription?
You can mark up to 12 essays/month on the free plan. For classroom use — marking a class set, running Class Insights, or generating lesson plans — you'll want Pro ($9.99/month, unlimited marking).
What's the fastest way to mark a class set of essays?
- Open kidswriting.ai/marking
- Paste the first student's essay + prompt
- Select exam type and year level (these stay selected between submissions)
- Click Mark
- Review and override any scores if needed
- Move to the next student
There's no batch upload yet — each essay is submitted individually, but with a good prompt/year level preset it takes about 30 seconds per essay plus your review time.
Marking Workflow
Can I override the AI scores?
Yes. After marking, you can adjust any rubric criterion score before saving or downloading the report. The AI gives you a starting point — you have full control.
Can I add my own comments before sharing with students?
Yes — you can add notes to the feedback before downloading as a PDF. The downloaded report shows your name (or your school's), not "kidswriting.ai" branding.
What does the downloaded PDF report include?
The PDF includes:
- Student name and essay prompt
- Overall score
- Full rubric breakdown with scores and explanations
- Strengths and areas to improve
- Sentence corrections
- Improvement plan
It's designed to be shared directly with students and parents — professional, clear, and without unnecessary platform branding.
Can I track individual student progress?
Yes. With Pro, you can manage a student roster under your dashboard. Each student has their own history, progress chart, and goal tracking. You can see at a glance how each student is progressing across sessions.
Class Insights & Lesson Planning
What is Class Insights?
Class Insights (Pro) aggregates rubric scores across all students you've marked and shows you which criteria your whole class is struggling with. Instead of manually reviewing 25 essays to find patterns, you see it in one view:
"12 of 25 students scored below 5 in Vocabulary. 8 scored below 5 in Text Structure."
This tells you exactly what to teach next.
How do I generate a lesson plan?
Once you've marked a set of essays and reviewed Class Insights:
- Click Generate Lesson Plan from the Class Insights view
- The AI creates a TLC-aligned lesson plan targeting your class's weakest criteria
- The plan includes differentiation notes, NSW curriculum outcome codes, and a follow-up task
The whole process — from finishing marking to having a lesson plan — takes under 2 minutes.
What curriculum alignment does the lesson plan use?
Lesson plans are aligned to NSW English curriculum outcomes (NESA/ACARA) and follow the TLC (Teaching and Learning Cycle) framework. If you're in VIC, the plan structure still applies — just note the outcome codes are NSW-based.
Does it cover Australian English?
Yes — all feedback, rubric language, and lesson plans use Australian English spelling and curriculum terminology. This is not a US tool with Australian branding.
Assignments & Student Management
Can I assign an essay prompt to my students?
Yes. From your dashboard you can create an assignment with a specific prompt, exam type, and due date. Students linked to your class can see and complete the assignment from their own accounts.
Marking can be done by the student (and reviewed by you), or by you directly.
Can I see all my students' essays in one place?
Yes — the Students tab in your dashboard shows every student in your roster with their recent submissions, scores, and progress trends.
How many students can I manage?
There's no hard cap. Pro includes unlimited student management.
Using kidswriting.ai for NAPLAN, Selective & Exams
Is the NAPLAN marking aligned to official criteria?
Yes. kidswriting.ai uses the 10 official NAPLAN writing criteria published by ACARA, with the same band descriptors that human NAPLAN markers use. Scores map to the official 0–6 band scale.
How accurate is it compared to a human NAPLAN marker?
For most essays, the AI is within 1–2 marks per criterion of a trained human marker. The overall score direction (strong/weak across criteria) is highly reliable. Use it as a diagnostic tool — it's excellent for identifying patterns across a class set quickly.
Can it mark handwritten essays?
Yes — upload a clear photo (JPG or PNG) of the handwritten essay and the AI will read and mark it. Best results come from well-lit, in-focus photos with reasonably legible handwriting.
Privacy & School Policies
Is student data kept private?
Yes. Essays are processed to generate feedback and are not shared publicly or used to train external models. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Does the platform comply with Australian privacy obligations?
We take privacy seriously and handle data in accordance with the Australian Privacy Act. If your school has specific data governance requirements, contact us at support@kidswriting.ai to discuss.
Can parents see their child's results?
Not directly — the platform doesn't have a separate parent portal. Teachers can download and share PDF reports with parents through existing school communication channels (email, student management system, etc.).
